Understanding the 4 Basic Types of Unemployment

Understanding the 4 Basic Types of Unemployment If youve ever been laid off, then youve experienced one of the types of unemployment  that economists measure. These categories are used to gauge the health of an economy - be it local, national, or international - by looking at how many people are in the workforce. Economists use this data to help governments and businesses navigate economic change. Understanding Unemployment In basic economics, employment is tied to wages. If you are employed, that means youre willing to work for the prevailing wage being offered to do the job youre doing. If you are unemployed, that means you are unable or unwilling to do that same job. There are two ways of being unemployed, according to economists. Voluntary unemployment occurs when a person is jobless by choice, rather than due to a lack of employment opportunities. Quitting your job because you just won the lottery and no longer need a steady paycheck is one example of voluntary unemployment.Involuntary unemployment occurs when a person is willing and able to work for a given wage but cannot find a job. Corporate layoffs following a merger or a downturn in the economy are two examples of involuntary unemployment.   Economists are chiefly interested in involuntary unemployment because it helps them gauge the overall job market. They divide involuntary unemployment into three categories. Frictional Unemployment Frictional unemployment is the time a worker spends between jobs. Examples of this include a freelance developer whose contract has ended without another gig waiting, a recent college grad seeking his or her first job, or a mother returning to the workforce after raising a family. In each of these instances, it will take time and resources (friction) for that person to find a new job. Although frictional unemployment is generally considered short-term, it may not be that brief. This is especially true for people new to the workforce who lack recent experience or professional connections. In general, however, economists regard this kind of unemployment as a sign of a healthy jobs market as long as its low. A low frictional unemployment rate means people seeking work are having a fairly easy time finding it. Cyclical Unemployment Cyclical unemployment  occurs during downturns in the  business cycle when demand for goods and services declines and companies respond by cutting production and laying off workers. When this happens, there are more workers than there are available jobs. Unemployment is the inevitable result. Economists use this to gauge the health of an entire economy or large sectors of one. Cyclical unemployment may be short-term, lasting mere weeks for some people, or long-term. It all depends on the degree of the economic downturn and what industries are most affected.  Economists usually focus on addressing the root causes of the economic downturns, rather than correcting cyclical unemployment itself. Structural Unemployment Structural unemployment is the most serious kind of unemployment because it points to seismic changes in an economy. It occurs when a person is ready and willing to work, but cannot find employment because none is available or they lack the skills to be hired for the jobs that do exist. Oftentimes, these people may be jobless for months or years and may drop out of the workforce entirely. This kind of unemployment may be caused by automation that eliminates a job held by a person, such as when a welder on an assembly line is replaced by a robot. It may also be caused by the collapse or decline of an important industry due to globalization  as jobs are shipped overseas in pursuit of lower labor costs. In the 1960s, for example, about 98 percent of shoes sold in the U.S. were American-made. Today, that figure is closer to ten percent. Seasonal Unemployment Seasonal unemployment occurs when the demand for workers varies over the course of the year. It can be thought of as a form of structural unemployment because the skills of the seasonal employees are not needed in certain labor markets for at least some part of the year. The construction market in northern climates depends on the season in a way it doesnt in warmer climates, for example. Seasonal unemployment is viewed as less problematic than regular structural unemployment, mainly because the demand for seasonal skills hasnt gone away forever and resurfaces in a fairly predictable pattern.

Gallipoli - the movie Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Gallipoli - the movie - Essay Example However, this battle just marked a beginning of a stream of others at different battlefields such as within Belgium and France. The historical World War 1 broke in the year 1914 with two, main opposing alliances of nations. By the fact that Austria was a member to the British Empire, most Australians supported the battle of land. Many Australian men volunteered to fight the war in support of the Britain and were ferried overseas for training the British side opted to support Russia in order to defeat Turkey through which they would be in a position to weaken Germany (Commonwealth of Australia, 2005 p. 1-2). Through this, the trainees interacted with other cultures and thus learnt to appreciate diversity. During the World War 1, April 25 of 1915 marked a memorable occurrence when the troops of Australia were deployed to the peninsula of Gallipoli in order to secure it strategically for the ease of taking victory from their counters who also eyed the battle field. The site was importan t for the battle as it commanded good way for supplies through the sea and also as attacking points with the security of rocky cliffs and long range of viewership. The battle at Gallipoli is interpreted to have given the people of Australia a chance to come out for the world to note on her morals and honor, and to display her sovereignty as an independent state. It is sure that the battle at Gallipoli stuck to the history of this country, not only to the relatives that lost their loved ones but also to the country as a whole; for through the war and the campaign, the young Australian men were presented with a rare opportunity to showcase their patriotism, a chance that would have never been provided. As depicted from the movie, the young men got a chance to travel wide and far and interact with various cultures different from their indigenous one. The movie, which was done for a reminder of the historic war serves to remind the people of the strong will, the bond of fraternity as we ll as the thrilling strength with which the men fought for defense of their national heritage; their land. The young men fought relentlessly even when nothing else faced them but death, they would not turn back. Together with thousands of other strong willed soldiers, thousands of young men surrendered their lives for the sake of patriotism. Though with bitter memories of pain and loss, the name Gallipoli as adopted and used by the Australians means pride, honor as well as glory of the many young men who surrendered their lives for the sake of future generations in Australia. As historians reveal, the sheer horror that faced the Australian at Gallipoli, their spirit in determination would not stop them from their mission; standing for their nation (Anon, nd, p.2). Therefore, these along others formed the basis through which the social benefits emanating from the war are persistently seen many years after the horror. Australia underwent through major reforms within the period of 1980 to 1990. The major thematic provisions of the movie as set in the 1980s are the development of a country which innocence is evident through the setting of early 1900 before and during the World War 1. The coming of age of the country is seen through the depicted imagery of the gradual loss of innocence of the Australian soldiers who

Personal determinants Essay Example for Free

Personal determinants Essay An important factor in addressing how a person interprets the outcomes is recognition of the personal determinants. This is affected by the choice of variables to be used in the evaluation process. Bandura’s choice for such variable depicts what may be the most distinctive aspect of human life, that is, people have abilities to adapt to different environments (Bandura, 1986). For instance, people are able to live in a variety of physical environments such as deserts, rainforests, Polar Regions and so on. They are also able to live and engage in a variety of social environments such as nomadic systems, diverse religious beliefs, different socio economic and socio cultural activities and so on. People also exhibit a variety of unique capabilities that cannot be attributed to the occurrence of evolution over time (Bandura, 1971). In fact, the list of human beings’ unique capabilities relative to animals cannot be exhausted in a single book. Hence, in order to perform an analysis of psychological functioning, one must specify the psychological mechanisms that facilitate the unique capabilities. Bandura’s (1986) theory has a focal point on the cognitive methods that enable people to learn about the world around them (environment) and also about themselves, and use the knowledge gained to control their behavior and mental experiences. In particular, Bandura (1986) enlisted five basic capabilities that facilitate the learning process, as described below. Symbolizing capability implies the ability of people to represent their knowledge symbolically. The most common symbolic representation or conveyance of messages is language (Bandura, 1971). The ability to use symbols in terms of language is perhaps the most fundamental capability in human beings as it serves as a leeway for the other capabilities. Vicarious capability is the ability to acquire skills, knowledge and other emotional tendencies through observation or a similar approach (Bandura, 1971). Bandura’s (2006) assiduous analysis of vicarious processes that are involved in acquiring skills makes the cognitive theory not only realistic but also unusually easy to comprehend and interpret. In addition, it clears most of the issues that are usually overlooked by psychological theories such how people acquire knowledge and skills that enable them to act efficiently. According to Bandura (1997), vicarious capability enables people to keep away from risky or costly undertakings that could lead to fatal outcomes. This is because the people ideally have a sense of experience by observing their own characters relative to the characters or behavior of others. Bandura (1986) referred to the ability to anticipate future contingencies as the forethought capability of human beings. Forethought capability is vital for both emotional and motivational perspectives of life. For instance, contrary to popular belief, psychological distress arises from peoples’ anticipated dreadful experiences and not the present or actual experiences. It is because of the ability to derive alternative approaches that one can foresee the consequences of an action without actually being involved in it. According to Bandura (1986), the fourth unique human capability is the self-regulatory capability. This is the capacity of an individual to set goals. In addition, this capability allows individuals to evaluate their performance in relation to their own (internal) standards of performance. Bandura (1986) further noted that the ability of people to evaluate their self-concept, esteem and values enables them have a sense of self-direction and ability to lead life without much reliance on others. Much similar to the above capability is the self-reflective capability. According to Bandura (1997), this is the capacity of human beings to have personal thoughts. In this context, personal reflections lay a course for action and formulation of ideas by individuals based on self-efficacy. The aforementioned capabilities do not work in isolation but in concert. In particular, according to Bandura (1997), the aspects of self-reflection, self-regulation and forethought act in synergy to form a self-system, which comprises the framework of personality. Furthermore, people are able to control their emotions and social lives by integrating the constituents of the self-system (Bandura, 1986). Self-reflection in particular is â€Å"distinctly human† and forms a prominent feature of the social cognitive theory. Through self-reflection, individuals derive sense from their experiences and embrace their cognitions and self-beliefs. Consequently, they are able to engage in self-evaluation and are able to shift their thinking and behavior accordingly (Bandura, 1986).

The Influence of Women in Epic of Gilgamesh Essay -- Epic Gilgamesh es

The Influence of Women in Epic of Gilgamesh Gilgamesh can be viewed as a writing that describes the social scene of the times it was written in. The characters of Enkidu and Gilgamesh are strong males. The roles of women in Gilgamesh are submissive and subtle. Women in this ancient Sumerian tale tend to be passive, but capable of influencing the outcome of events. Enkidu is a mighty force to confront. He is so strong that he is seen as a wild animal in his first appearances in the book. Gilgamesh is as strong or even stronger than Enkidu. He is the king of Uruk and is part god and part man. These dominant male characters command the most attention of the reader. The prostitute is one of the roles of women in the text. She brought about the conversion of Enkidu from a savage creature to a civilized member of society. Without this female intervention, Enkidu would not stand by Gilgamesh's side in the adventures to come. The harlot is used by society as a tool to draw Enkidu in. The male trapper told her to entice Enkidu with her nakedness and to lie with him. Once Enkidu had do...

Home Schooling And Educating Children At Home

One of the major advantages of homeschooling is that it allows parents to be profoundly involved in the instruction of their kid. Lyman ( 1998 ) and Mayberry ( 1988 ) suggest that parents are interested in homeschooling their kids because of the turning perceptual experience that the school system is unequal in developing kids into high winners and that many schools by and big deliver standardized instruction without respect to the person ‘s endowment and potency. Lyman ( 1998 ) and Mayberry ( 1988 ) write that by supplying their undivided attending to their kids, they are in a better place to acknowledge their kid ‘s possible and promote the kid. In a survey by Lines ( 1991 ) , it was found that about three fourths of the parents who home schooled their kids besides prepared their ain instruction stuffs. Furthermore, in a survey comparing the public presentation of homeschooled kids with the regularly schooled kids, it was found that the former outperformed the latter on many steps ( Ray & A ; Wartes, 1991 as cited in Abell, 2002 ) The 2nd advantage of place schooling is that parents can avoid the disadvantages of modern twenty-four hours public instruction ( Clark, 1994 ) . Clark ( 1994 ) suggests that parents are progressively concerned that many public schools have a batch of offense and other bad pupils can negatively act upon their kids. He suggests that parents feel that because drug usage and force is increasing in many public schools, they are better able to guarantee the safety of their kids by educating them at place. Therefore by homeschooling their kids, parents can guarantee the safety of their kids. Homeschooling is non without its disadvantages and one of the normally quoted disadvantages is that place schooling consumes a batch of clip and the parents do non hold any clip for other activities. For illustration, if a kid has to be homeschooled, one of the parents has to give up work and pass a big portion of the twenty-four hours in learning and tutoring the kid. This may put a major load on the parent and may take to feelings of depression, ennui etc. Furthermore, because the parent may or may non be qualified adequate to learn the kid, he or she may non be in a place to learn every bit good as the instructors in a school where there are different instructors for different topics and are hired by the school based on their makings. The 2nd disadvantage of place schooling is that parents feel that they are paying revenue enhancements and other responsibilities, which go into making public schools, and if they do n't direct their kids to these schools, it would be a waste of the money spent. A related ground is that many parents feel that schools have many installations like research labs and playgrounds that place schooled kids do non hold entree to and hence miss out on several chances to larn and socialise ( Abell, 2002 ) . Another disadvantage of homeschooling is that societal cost of place schooling. Diana Jenkins writes that kids feel the demand to socialise and a major portion of their development is in their ability to interact with other kids of their ain age group. She suggests that kids who are place schooled are non in a place to interact with other kids and frequently feel that they are losing out on a really of import experience. Furthermore, Jenkins besides suggests that a major portion of acquisition is the ability to larn while taking the positions of others into consideration. She suggests that homeschooled kids do non hold the luxury of taking into history other pupils ‘ thoughts and sentiments and hence stop up with cognition that is merely in one way. It appears from the above reappraisal that homeschooling has more disadvantages than advantages and that it may be better for the kids to go to schools than stay at place and survey. However, because many parents feel that public schools have many disadvantages, their concerns can be removed by making better place school partnerships. While traditionally parents have merely dropped their kids at school, and participated in some pupil parent meets, some bookmans have suggested that schools can affect the parents more by back uping them with better instruction resources which they can utilize at place to do place tutoring by them more interesting, and besides ask foring parents to school to take part in synergistic activities with instructors so that instructors can besides profit from some of the cognition that parents have. Another suggestion is that better communicating channels should be created between instructors and parents so that the instructors are cognizant if the kid is tra veling through a hard stage and is underachieving because of that ground, and likewise parents are cognizant if the kid is holding some interaction jobs at school because of some issues at place. This manner the environment at both the school and place can better ( Patrikakau, 2005 ) . Therefore, it is clear from the above the place schooling is popular among many parents because of the feeling among them that public schools have many jobs like offense and make non pay single attending to the pupils like the parents can. However it is besides clear that because parents can non supply many installations like research labs and resort areas and can non assist them with societal interactions with friends and schoolmates, homeschooling may non be a really good thought. It appears that both schools and parents can profit from better coaction between parents and instructors where parents experience safe about their kids and instructors can profit from cognizing more about the pupils from the parents.

Edmunds Corrugated Parts Essay

The issues that Edmunds Corrugated Parts and Services have been faced with all lead the company to be in position that they are in. This company issues could be sum up as employment and competitor advantage. The employee issues started from the beginning of the company. According to the case Larry, the owner and operator, was not only given a loan but also a barn to start his business. Which was a great start for Larry because he was able to employee about 100 people which many of them were his neighbors. Just as in any company Edmunds Corrugated Parts and Services was face with the fact of replacing employees because they were nearing retirement. As time change the younger generation sought to move away and not stay local so Larry was face with a potential unemployment issue in his company. The other issue that Edmunds was faced with was the fact that they were losing several industries in the United States. According to the case consolidation in the paper industry had wiped out hundreds of the U. S plants that Edmunds once served, with many of the survivors either opening overseas facilities or entering into joint ventures abroad. This was causing the loss of business for this company. Especially when the manufactures were investing in higher quality machines that broke down less frequently. This was the beginning of companies not utilize Edmunds parts because the parts were not needed. This issue was halting the growth and the even the potential to keep the company at the standing they were in for the past years. Create and describe a strategy for addressing the situation at hand. There are various ways of address the two situations at hand. As for the employee issues that they would be facing it is as simple of being proactive. Since the younger generation is leaving the area than there must be incentives for them. The New York Times reported that a Midwest Independent Transmission System Operator, known as Midwest I. S. O was faced with a similar problem. It was even reported that the jobs are so complex that summer interns and college graduates can’t step right into them. Just as the problem of the younger generation moving away and not wanting to stay both companies had similar issues. One of the first things we did was to enhance our employee referral program. Employees now have several opportunities to make money by referring candidates. First, we give any employee who refers a candidate a scratch-off card with a discount for coffee, food or a movie, and we enter their names into a monthly drawing. The monthly winner gets $300, even if we don’t hire the person who was recommended (Begley 2008). When employees refer new employees that general means that the current employee is vested and want to see the company succeed. When the new employee performs below standards than that reflects the current employee and they generally will police themselves. This would allow the current employee to essential hire their replacement and the company could continue with its business. As far as the other issue of growth and losing clients there are many ways that Edmunds could fix it. Edmunds could look into a joint venture. A joint venture or strategic alliance is a form of partnership where businesses come together to share knowledge, markets, and profits. Joint ventures can take on various forms. Small companies can band together to take on the goliaths of their industry. Big companies can form alliances with quicker and nimbler small businesses. And small companies have the opportunity to forge strategic alliances with big name companies for expanded geographic reach (Zarhorsky 2012). This strategy could help them serve the companies that they had lost. If they are in a partnership with the company that services the newer machines they could reach all of the clients that both companies have. In essence it would they could be one company for all machine and equipment needs. Assess which element in the strategy you just described would be the hardest to implement and explain why. Within any business a partnership the difficult part is the implementation of it. The problem that Edmunds would have is the fact of trying to join with a competitor. The companies that are servicing the newer machines are his competition because they have the same clients he uses to. The advantage that Edmunds has is they still have a market share and both companies would benefit from this. According to Business Link a joint venture can also be very flexible. For example, a joint venture can have a limited life span and only cover part of what you do, thus limiting the commitment for both parties and the business’ exposure. This does not have to be a longer term but just to make one stop show to server all of the machines whether they are new or older model. A joint venture can help your business grow faster, increase productivity and generate greater profits. A successful joint venture can offer access to new markets and distribution networks, increased capacity, sharing of risks and costs with a partner, access to greater resources, including specialized staff, technology and finance (Business Link 2012). With all of these factors this would cause the company to grown and be able to stay in business. The difficult part would be to implement the changes that come with a partnership. The companies would have to adopt each other policies and produces to assure they are serving the customer on the same level. Describe what strategies Edmunds could use in the future to reduce potential crises before they happen. One of the main issues that Edmunds was having was centered around employees. Edmunds employees were soon to retire and there were no plans to back fill them. Today, many companies recruit and hire to fill holes â€Å"in the moment† and don’t always consider their long-term business goals or the future needs of the organization. This can potentially lead to bad hires or ultimately, lost opportunities (Hess 2011). There was no recruitment strategy in place to assure that there were back fills for the employees. The only mention was that of the younger generation leaving and not wanting to stay local. As the war for talent continues to escalate, it’s essential that key business leaders are involved with the development of your recruitment strategy to ensure that every hire you make is a good one – for today and tomorrow. Hiring to your business strategy is paramount to ensuring that you’re not only hiring the best available talent – but you’re hiring the best available talent with the desired experience and competencies, to meet both current and future needs of the organization. The future success of your company depends on it (Hess 2011). If the company would hired based on their business model this would help attach the right qualified people. They were only concern with going after the younger generation but the experience was with a older generation. Older generation still has at least 10 years or more and would be significantly younger than that of the retiring work. This strategy with help fix one of their major issues. With a new set of employees brings on a new set of ideas and ways of conducting business. Another area that could help prevent or reduce a potential crisis is developing a Research and Development program. According to Business Exchange research and development (R&D) taken on a more prominent role in businesses, as consumer are looking for quality and innovation at a reasonable price range. This is why Edmunds began to lose clients because the machines changed and there was not a need for their parts on the newer machines. More and more companies are looking to their R&D teams for the â€Å"next great things† as they navigate through the current recession. When revenue is low companies will begin to look for new innovative ways of doing business. Edmunds was not prepared for this shift in the market. If a R&D program was in place this would help prepare for them what lies ahead.

Background of the Mongol Empire essays

Background of the Mongol Empire essays Genghis Khan was a warrior and ruler of genius who, starting from obscure and insignificant beginnings, brought all the nomadic tribes of Mongolia under the rule of himself and his family in a rigidly disciplined military state. He then turned his attention toward the settled peoples beyond the borders of his nomadic realm and began the series of campaigns of plunder and conquest that eventually carried the Mongol armies as far as the Adriatic Sea in one direction and the Pacific coast of China in the other, leading to the establishment of the great Mongol Empire. Kublai Khan was the fourth son of Tolui, the youngest of Genghis' four sons by his favorite wife. He began to play an important part in the extension and consolidation of the Mongol Empire only in 1251 when he was in his middle 30s. His brother, the emperor Mongke, resolved to complete the conquest of Sung China, which had been planned by Genghis' third son, Ogodei, and also to subdue Persiaa task allotted to Kublai's brother Hulegu, Kublai was invested with full civil and military responsibility for the affairs of China. He appears never to have learned to read or write Chinese, but already he had recognized the superiority of Chinese thought and had gathered around himself a group of trustworthy Confucian advisers. Marco Polo traveled to China and on his adventure, he came to Kublai Khan's summer palace in Shangdu. Khan sent him on many official tours of the kingdom. These tours took Marco to China's southern and eastern provinces and as far south as Burma. Marco served as a government official in the Chinese City of Yangzhou for three years. The Mongol Empire established trade roads to connect Russia and Persia with eastern Asia. Trade routes with the Mongol Empire from Europe had a major effect on history and the way of life of Europe at that time. If there weren't any trade routes with the Mongol Empire Christopher Columbus, might not have discovered the New Wo...

Lit - Essay Example In the early days, those schools not attached to a church were primarily intended for the sons of nobility as a means of preparing them for future leadership and, by the seventeenth century, many schools had opened that were supported by private foundations with positions being offered to the poor. The earlier schools catered to specific social classes, frequently requiring students to live within the grounds during the instructional period and sometimes functioning as full-service orphanages. Schools were structured to admit both boys and girls, only boys or only girls depending upon the proprietor and the method of instruction was also left to the discretion of the proprietor. There was widespread concern, however, that educating the masses would lead to large-scale uprisings, so these early attempts at the formation of a national education system began to fade replaced by trade schools, apprenticeships and a general apathy on the parts of the wealthy and the poor alike regarding f ormal education. By the early nineteenth century, the period classified as the Georgian period, curriculum at these schools had been mostly structured to provide appropriate instruction for the particular social class to which it catered (Gillard, 2004). Social media exercise - Essay Example On the home page there are links which read to other pages. For example, after searching under the name Microsoft Company, the home page contains other links on reviews, interviews and benefits (â€Å"Glassdoor†). A click on them directs one to another page with more details on employee reviews. From some of these reviews, it is evident that the employees have worked for long at the company and still enjoy working there. The positive reviews are many than the negative reviews and a look at the negative reviews shows that the company is still an ideal company to work for and get the best job benefits. Under procedural justice, the individual perception is that the outcome allocation decisions are fair (Rawls 74). The two employee review examples I noticed on procedural justice was where one of the employees noted that the pay is 100% based on performance, not on politics or other factors that other company use to pay employees (â€Å"Glassdoor†). There is another review where the employee says that the company cares for its employees. There were also several discussions on distributive justice. In distributive justice, diverse employees get fair allocation of resources (Rawls 242). One of these reviews is where the employee says that at Microsoft there are diverse employees and all have equal chances of moving across teams, geographies and disciplines. The other review says that it is a large corporation with a diverse group and gives very attractive health and medical insurance covers (â€Å"Glassdoor†). There many outcomes associated with fairness and unfairness. All the outcomes, whether associated with unfairness or fairness usually have an effect on the topic of discussion or an organization. In the reviews I read on Microsoft Company, the outcomes from the company are largely associated with individual perceptions of fairness. For example, most reviews say that the company
